In 1943, Dr. Abraham Maslow published an influential article entitled The Theory of Human Behavior. The findings are still widely used as foundational elements in the social sciences, including marketing. According to Dr. Maslow, all humans must satisfy the following needs in order: Physiological, Safety, Belonging, Esteem, and Self-Actualization.

Therefore, before any of us can feel safe, develop relationships, and pursue goals…our basic physiological needs must be satisfied (i.e. eating, drinking and being healthy enough to progress the the next level of the hierarchy). Health is #1 because without it we cannot satisfy higher order needs. The logical extension of this knowledge is that healthier employees are more productive. One way to improve employee health: Have them stand more, and sit less.

In Practice: The Benefits of Standing
Standing is a physiological act, thus most important in the hierarchy of needs. Research shows that professionals benefit by utilizing sit/stand desks during the work-day. Short breaks of standing reduces stress and its negative effects. Of course, some professionals might not enjoy standing to do their work (even for an hour or two per day). Others will see the value. This is purely a personal preference.

However, there is one market that will likely see the value of standing periodically at work: Those with bodily-kinetic preferences. Not everyone works the same way. There are at least eight major types of human intelligence, which influence workplace behavior. One is bodily-kinetic. Entrepreneurs tend to fall into this category. When you purchase office desks for yourself and/or employees, you may want to consider a sit/stand desk. Evidence suggests it will improve employee health and productivity.
